Effect of Dietary Inclusion of Sodium Bicarbonate on Digestibility of Nutrients and Immune Response in Caged Layers During the Summer Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Abbas,G; Ahmad,F; Saeed,M; Ayasan,T; Mahmood,A; Yasmeen,R; Kamboh,A.
ABSTRACT The aim of this project was to investigate the effect of dietary inclusion of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) on nutrient digestibility and immune response of caged layers during summer when the temperature exceeds 40 ˚C. For immune response trial, White Leghorn layers (n=160; 24 weeks old) were purchased from a poultry farm and were divided into five treatment/diets groups (4 replicate/treatment). Diet A, was without NaHCO3 and served as control whereas, diets B, C, D, and E contained 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% NaHCO3, respectively. All these birds were vaccinated against Newcastle disease (ND) virus at the start of the experiment and thereafter with one-month intervals. Blood samples were collected from two birds/replicate at 10 days post vaccination...

Transport of broilers: load microclimate during Brazilian summer REA
Barbosa Filho,José A. D.; Queiroz,Marília L. V.; Brasil,Daniel de F.; Vieira,Frederico M. C.; Silva,Iran J. O..
The objective of this study was to characterize the microclimatic profile of broiler transport trucks under commercial conditions, in the summer, by continuous monitoring of environmental variables (temperature and air relative humidity). Three loads were monitored from farm to slaughterhouse, considering factors such as distance and day periods (morning, afternoon, and night). To obtain the profile of the environmental variables during journey, data loggers, that determined the microclimate to which birds were submitted, were installed in the trucks; data loggers also allowed visualization of the Enthalpy Comfort Index (ECI) so that load regions could be classified according to heat comfort limits for 6-week old poultries. Temperature, relative humidity,...

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature-humidity index (THI) on the milk coagulation properties of Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle from northeast part of Italy. A total of 592 individual milk samples from six dairy herds were evaluated. The milk coagulation properties traits analysed were milk rennet coagulation time and curd firmness, as well as the fat, protein, and casein contents, pH, milk aptitude to coagulate (IAC), and the somatic cell count. The THI was determined during the periods of sample collection. The THI results showed that values of up to 75 did not significantly change the IAC values; however, when the THI values were above 75, the IAC decreased significantly. The control of THI can be used to...

Physiological responses of growing pigs to high ambient temperature and/or inflammatory challenges R. Bras. Zootec.
Campos,Paulo Henrique Reis Furtado; Le Floc'h,Nathalie; Noblet,Jean; Renaudeau,David.
ABSTRACT Global warming is one of the major environmental threats facing the world in the 21st century. This fact will have a significant impact on pig production due to its direct effects on welfare, health, and performance of pigs. Besides, the effects of high temperatures will presumably become more important over the next decades due to the development of pig production in developing countries mainly located in tropical and subtropical areas, where animals are often exposed to ambient temperatures above their thermal comfort zone. Furthermore, pigs reared in tropical areas are often confronted to sanitary challenges including poor hygiene conditions, lack of respect for sanitary rules, and pathogens. This results in the stimulation of the immune system...

Restoration of the di-myo-inositol-phosphate pathway in the piezo-hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus barophilus ArchiMer
Cario, Anais; Mizgier, Alex; Thiel, Axel; Jebbar, Mohamed; Oger, Phil M..
Most Thermococcales accumulate di-myo-inositol-phosphate (DIP) as an organic solute as a response to heat stress. We have studied the accumulation of this osmolyte in the high-hydrostatic pressure adapted hyperthermophile Thermococcus barophilus. We found no accumulation of DIP under any of the stress conditions tested, although this archaeon harbors the 3 DIP synthesis genes. Lack of synthesis is due to the lack of expression of TERMP_01135 coding for the second step of DIP synthesis. In contrast to other species, the T. barophilus synthesis operon is interrupted by a four gene locus, in reverse orientation. Restoring an operon like structure at the DIP locus restored DIP synthesis, but did not have an impact on growth characteristics, suggesting that...

Exposure to solar radiation drives organismal vulnerability to climate: evidence from an intertidal limpet ArchiMer
Chapperon, Coraline; Volkenborn, Nils; Clavier, Jacques; Seite, Sarah; Seabra, Rui; Lima, Fernando P..
Understanding the physiological abilities of organisms to cope with heat stress is critical for predictions of species’ distributions in response to climate change. We investigated physiological responses (respiration and heart beat rate) of the ectotherm limpet Patella vulgata to heat stress events during emersion and the role of seasonal and microclimatic acclimatization for individual thermal tolerance limits. Individuals were collected from 5 microhabitats characterized by different exposure to solar radiation in the high intertidal zone of a semi-exposed rocky shore in winter and summer of 2014. Upper thermal tolerance limits (heat coma temperatures - HCTs, and heart rate Arrhenius break temperatures - ABTs) were determined for individuals from each...

Photochemical efficiency in bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) during recovery from high temperature stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Costa,Ernany Santos; Bressan-Smith,Ricardo; Oliveira,Jurandi Gonçalves de; Campostrini,Eliemar; Pimentel,Carlos.
Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., cv. Carioca and cv. Negro Huasteco) and cowpea plants (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp cv. Epace 10) were grown in a growth chamber with PPF at leaf level of 200 mumol.m-2.s-1 and air temperature 25 + 1 ºC. The first fully expanded pair of leaves of 12-day-old plants was submitted to high temperature stress (25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 48 ºC) for 1.5 h. The photochemical efficiency of PSII during recovery was monitored by means of chlorophyll a fluorescence at six different times (0.5, 1, 2, 4, 24, and 48 h) after stress, at 25 ºC, using a modulated fluorimeter. Increasing temperature promoted an increase in Fphi at 45 ºC, possibly associated with dissociation of the light harvesting complex from the reaction centre of PSII, but a...

Thermal biology of the deep-sea vent annelied Paralvinella grasslei: in vivo studies ArchiMer
Cottin, D; Ravaux, J; Leger, N; Halary, S; Toullec, J; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Gaill, F; Shillito, B.
The annelid Paralvinella grasslei is a deep-sea vent endemic species that colonizes the wall of active chimneys. We report here the first data on its thermal biology based on in vivo experiments in pressurized aquaria. Our results demonstrate that P. grasslei survives a 30 min exposure at 30 degrees C, and suggest that the upper thermal limit of this species is slightly above this temperature. The first signs of stress were noticed at 30 C, such as a significant increase in the animal's activity and the expression of HSP70 stress proteins. A preliminary investigation of the kinetics of stress protein expression surprisingly showed high levels of HSP70 proteins as late as 3.5 h after the heat shock. Finally, we provide here the first sequences for vent...

III.Heat stress in Triticum: kinetics of Na, K and P accumulation Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dias,Ana S.; Fernando,Ana L.; Lidon,Fernando C..
Genotypes of bread and durum wheat were submitted to heat stress after anthesis and the accumulation of Na, K and P, at booting, grain filling and maturity, were investigated. It was found that, after anthesis, the levels of Na in shoots were considerably higher in durum relatively to bread wheat, being this trend also observed in the total plant accumulation. In these genotypes, heat stress affected significantly Na concentration in shoots. In general, heat stressed plants had significant higher levels of K in the shoots and the proportion of this nutrient translocation from the roots also increased with heat stress. In general, the levels of P didn't show significant differences with heat stress. The effects of heat stress among the wheat genotypes life...

The interactions between high temperatures and Cu/Zn accumulation were investigated in bread and durum wheat. Plants were grown in a greenhouse, at two different temperatures regimes (control - 25/14ºC and heat stress - 31/20ºC), and the contents and uptake/translocation of Cu and Zn were evaluated during three developmental stages of plant growth (booting, grain filling and maturity). During grain filling and at maturity it was found that root, shoot and spike concentrations of Cu increased in heat stressed plants of the genotypes Golia and Acalou. The same trend was observed for root and shoot concentrations of Zn in both durum wheat genotypes. It was concluded that plants submitted to high temperatures (during the grain filling period) become more...
